Tuesday 25th September - The books arrive

A lot happened today. The books arrived, the website is live and Rutland Radio have aired the first interview about The Cancer Club. It hasn’t really been that long since I started this but in a way I feel I’ve been living with it forever.

I’m in my second week only of my drive to get strong and fit again after a hard year physically and emotionally and already I am feeling the benefits. I have a trainer, Nicola, who I feel very safe with. On Sunday she came here to Duddington and we went for a run around the village and my God, that was hard. This morning was sunny so when I met Nicola at the gym I asked if we could spend some time outside again so we ran in the Meadows and then went back to the Gym for a workout. I’m already looking forward to it and I know it will get easier week by week.

I knew that it wouldn’t take long to find a typo or mistake in the book. No matter how many times things are proofed there is always something that slips through. But I’m not going to let it dull the pleasure from actually getting this to come together. It’s going to be a slog to raise the 25k but what the heck. We’ll make a good stab at it.

Helen came over to the office shortly before the interview was airing on the radio and we all sat together and listened. Sharon got weepy and hugged everyone and Helen got me to sign her book then started talking about how in ten years time she’ll be telling her kids about being part of this.

I sent a note to John to get him to look at the website. It still seems strange and sad not to have him here celebrating this with me. I guess it will always be sad. My challenges with breast cancer were probably a challenge too many for us to deal with. A breast care nurse was telling me that she knows of lots couples who have parted whilst going through breast cancer. It’s so sad that at the time we most need support and love we are parting from the people we’ve spent our lives with.

Anyway, I’m doing some real work tomorrow. My day job. I need to do some preparation and then I’ll just look at the website and flick through the book one more time before settling down for the night.
